GLoMeF to launch year-long campaign on reparations for Africans

The Global Media Foundation (GloMeF), a human rights and development advocacy organization, will soon launch a year-long campaign to educate the public, especially the youth, on the history and significance of reparations.

The Foundation will also host community dialogues, policy forums, and partner with local and international institutions to push for practical steps toward justice.

In a statement to mark this year’s African Union Day, GLoMeF called on African governments to unify efforts and establish national and regional mechanisms to advance reparations claims.

It urged international bodies to support transparent dialogue, research, and accountability frameworks, and advised Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and the media to continue raising awareness and amplifying the voices of those most impacted by historical injustices.

African Union Day

Touching on this year’s theme for the African Union Day, which is: “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations”, GLoMeF noted that this year’s commemoration shines a critical spotlight on the long-standing demand for reparative justice as a moral, historical, and legal imperative.

“The 2025 theme reaffirms the African Union’s commitment to addressing the enduring legacies of slavery, colonialism, and systemic racism. As a leading civil society organization focused on human rights, media freedom, and social justice, GloMeF stands in full solidarity with all Africans and people of African descent calling for meaningful reparations to address centuries of exploitation and injustice”, it said

“We cannot build a truly just and equal world without reckoning with the past,” said Raphael Godlove Ahenu, Executive Director of GLoMeF. “Reparations are not merely about financial compensation—they are about recognition, restitution, and restoring dignity to millions whose lives and futures have been shaped by historic and systemic wrongs.”

GLoMeF emphasized that reparations must include institutional reforms, educational equity, cultural restoration, and economic investments that uplift affected communities globally.

Global Media Foundation is a human rights and development advocacy organization based in Ghana. It leverages media, community engagement, and policy advocacy to promote justice, equity, and sustainable development.
