The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has organized a quiz competition on the 1992 Constitution for three Junior High Schools in the Nkoranza South Municipality of the Bono East Region Municipal.
The schools were the Nkoranza Methodist JHS, Nkoranza Girls Model JHS, and Saint Barnabas JHS.
The occasion, which created an opportunity for the basic school students to broaden their knowledge on the 1992 Constitution, formed part of activities lined up by the Commission to commemorate the 68th Independence celebration of Ghana.
The Nkoranza South Municipal NCCE Director, Mrs. Owusu Marian, told our correspondent that the program was, among others, meant to promote the learning of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
She explained that it was also a strategy and a tool to create awareness of the main values of Ghana’s democratic governance and to instill the spirit of patriotism as well as enhance student participation in governance at all levels.
Mrs. Marian commended the participating schools for their immeasurable time and knowledge to be part of the programme despite their tight academic schedule.
She told the students that as young citizens, they had the responsibility to get involved in the development of the country as Ghana’s future needs collective Responsibilities.
Civic education
The Director encouraged the students to attach more seriousness to civic education in their respective schools since it was an avenue to equip them with varying knowledge on discipline, patriotism, hard work, love for one another, and the country, as well as basic principles of the Constitution.
At the end of the competition, Saint Barnabas JHS emerged the winner with 50 points, Nkoranza Girls Model JHS placed second with 47 points, while Nkoranza Methodist JHS had the third place with 42.5 points.
To motivate the students, awards were given to the respective schools, with certificates of participation attached.
Mr. Owusu Mensah, a teacher of Saint Barnabas JHS, on behalf of the competing schools, expressed gratitude to the Commission for organizing such an educational programme and pledged to support the activities of the Commission since it will play a vital role in improving the lives and knowledge of the students.
