Gold Fields Ghana Foundation continues to make significant investments in infrastructural development in addition to other social interventions
Last Thursday, the Foundation held a sod-cutting ceremony to symbolize the commencement of reconstruction works on the 2.1 km road network linking Budo-junction to Bogoso junction in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem municipality of Western Region.
When completed, the project will serve as an alternative route to ease traffic from the main Tarkwa station to Bogoso junction road.
It will also speed up vehicular movement from Bogoso, Aboso, Damang and New Atuabo through Tarkwa township to boost economic and social activities.
At the sod-cutting ceremony, Mr. Abdel Razak Yakubu, the Executive Secretary of the Foundation, said the project is estimated to cost 11.6 million cedis.
Completion date
He indicated that although the project was scheduled to be completed within two years, the contractor has pledged to deliver and hand over in less than a year.
Mr. Yakubu said he had no doubt in his mind that the project would be ready within the new scheduled date considering the sophisticated equipment that had been brought on site by the contractor.
He also expressed readiness by the Foundation to pump resources into the road reconstruction works to ensure speedy execution.
He said to help transform the Budo junction-Bogoso junction road network to a top quality one, the Foundation sought the expertise of technocrats at the Municipal assembly with the actual design drawn by the Urban Roads Engineer.
Background
“Opinion leaders at New Atuabo who approached Gold Fields Ghana Foundation for reconstruction of a road linking Budo-junction to Bogoso junction will be smiling upon the completion of the project”, he stressed.
Residents of New Atuabo were re-settled in the community over twenty years ago.
The 2.1 km road network from the junction of their re-settled area (that is Budo city or junction) to Bogoso- junction, is deplorable hindering free flow of persons and goods.
Opinion leaders in the community therefore approached Gold Fields Ghana Foundation about two years ago to reconstruct a road linking Budo-junction to Bogoso junction for easy accessibility.
Mr. Yakubu stated that one of the pillars of the Foundation is infrastructure development, echoing its resolve to help improve the infrastructure of host communities.
The Executive Secretary said the Foundation will therefore leave no stone unturned in executing this task given by Gold Fields, the mother mining company, to the fullest.
MP grateful
The Member of Parliament for Tarkwa-Nsuaem constituency, Mr. Issa Taylor, said the sod – cutting ceremony had brought joy into the hearts of residents of New Atuabo and commended Gold Fields Ghana Foundation for coming to their rescue.
Mr. Taylor pledged to ensure that most of the deplorable road networks in the constituency, including the Animens Gas, Benso, Cyanide, Tarkwa-Banso and Esuoso roads, are fixed before the end of his tenure of office.
It is in this vein that he urged Ghana Manganese, Anglogold and other mining companies operating in the constituency to join hands with Gold Fields in giving the constituency a face- lift.
