Economic empowerment for PWDs in Nkoranza North gets major boost

Thirty-three Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the Nkoranza North District have received vital equipment and financial support aimed at enhancing their economic independence and improving their quality of life.

The items, distributed on September 10, 2025, at the Church of Pentecost in Busunya, included deep freezers, sewing machines, fufu-pounding machines, and cash support—all funded through the District Assembly Common Fund at a cost of over GH¢100,000.

The initiative was spearheaded by the District Chief Executive (DCE), Effah Patrick (popularly known as Patoo), and Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Joseph Kwasi Mensah, in collaboration with the District Social Welfare Department led by Nana Yaa Pormaa Asante.

In her welcome address, Nana Yaa Pormaa Asante emphasized that the government’s commitment to investing in people is at the heart of the distribution. She noted that the support was designed not only to assist PWDs in starting or improving their businesses but also to address their educational and medical needs.

She acknowledged the ongoing challenges PWDs face—such as social exclusion and neglect—and expressed hope that government interventions like this would contribute significantly to improving their lives.

Speaking at the event, Joseph Kwasi Mensah highlighted the importance of ensuring the proper use of the items and announced that the Disability Fund Management Committee will conduct regular monitoring to ensure accountability and sustainability.

“The government has allocated 3% of the District Assembly Common Fund to support PWDs, and it is our responsibility to make sure this support leads to lasting change,” the MP stated.

He also encouraged beneficiaries to adopt basic bookkeeping practices to help grow their businesses and cautioned against selling the donated items.

DCE Effah Patrick reaffirmed the Assembly’s ongoing commitment to supporting PWDs. He announced plans to begin construction on a dedicated working center or workshop space for PWDs in the district.

“All preparations for the project are complete. We will soon begin construction of a permanent site to serve as a working hub for our PWD community,” the DCE assured.

On behalf of the beneficiaries, Owusu Kwadjo Denis, Chairman of the Nkoranza North Federation of the Physically Challenged, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the government and the District Assembly.

He praised the Assembly’s continued efforts in promoting education, skills development, and empowerment for PWDs and appealed for an increase in the percentage allocated to the disability fund.
