Election Watch Ghana condemns heavy Police presence in Akwatia ahead of by-elections

Election Watch Ghana, a civil society group, has expressed deep disappointment and grave concern over the heavy deployment of Police personnel in the Akwatia constituency ahead of the upcoming by-elections.

The group, in a press statement jointly signed by its Conveners, Mark Ewusi Arkoh and Jude Balma, warned that the approach may inadvertently lead to low voter turnout and undermine the electoral process.

The group’s concerns are further exacerbated by inflammatory rhetoric employed by some politicians prior to the by-elections, which could heighten tensions and contribute to electoral violence.

Recommendations

Election Watch Ghana added that victims of violence during by-elections are often orchestrated by mainstream politicians rather than grassroots party loyalists in the constituency.

To ensure a peaceful, transparent, and credible by-election, the group recommended strict adherence to electoral rules and regulations including limiting access to polling stations to only accredited individuals, regardless of their stature or influence, and conducting thorough security screenings for all participants.

It is also calling for the prohibition of unauthorized groups, whether in uniform or not, within the voting environs, to prevent intimidation of voters or disruption of the electoral process.

“All participants, including electoral officials, party representatives, and voters, should undergo thorough security checks before entering the polling station premises. This will help prevent any potential security breaches and ensure a safe voting environment”, it added.

By adhering strictly to these rules, the group believes a violence-free by-election can be achieved, truly representing the will of the people of Akwatia.

Election Watch Ghana further urged all stakeholders, including the Electoral Commission, political parties, and security agencies, to prioritize the integrity of the electoral process and ensure that the by-election is conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner.

The group believes that the Akwantia by-elections should mark a turning point in Ghana’s electoral history, where the focus shifts from heavy police presence to adherence to democratic principles, saying: “We owe it to the people of Akwantia and to the nation to ensure that this by-election is conducted in a manner that upholds the integrity of our democracy.”
