Bono NADMO boss asks district coordinators to prioritize disaster risks reduction

Story by Christopher Tetteh, Sunyani

Mrs. Fati Kine-Lam, the Bono Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), has implored her Municipal and District Coordinators to initiate and prioritize activities and programs that reduce disaster risks.

“Undertake community engagement, clean up exercises, radio education and sensitization on disaster prevention activities in your various Districts,” she said.

The occasion was an orientation program organized by the Bono regional NADMO office earlier today for the newly appointed coordinators and officers to keep them abreast of the core mandate of NADMO, their responsibilities, duties, operational areas, and understanding of their roles and expectations.

Operational procedures

As part of the event, Mrs. Kine-Lam officially welcomed and introduced them into the office, familiarizing themselves and training them about the scope of NADMO.

They were further taken through effective operational procedures to prevent incidents from happening and effectively execute the mandates of NADMO.

Mrs. Kine-Lam said: “Disaster management is not one institution’s business” and therefore urged the new directors to involve relevant institutions such as the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the Environmental Health Officers, Environmental Protection Agency and the National Petroleum Authority for effective disaster prevention programs and activities.

She urged the coordinators to be submissive and collaborate with other stakeholders such as chiefs, religious groups, clubs and agencies in their activities for the achievement of greater results.

“We only want to ensure and see there is no disaster happening in our region”, Mrs. Kine-Lam stated.

Collaboration

She told the District Coordinators to also collaborate with the MMDCEs and the Members of Parliaments in their respective areas for support.

“Identify opportunities from other local partners such as NGOs in the Districts to expand your source of income for disaster prevention programs and activities”, she also said.

Mrs. Kine-Lam advised them to ensure they link up with the assembly members and zonal coordinators at the community level for accurate primary information in case of any disaster or to aid incident prevention.

Mrs Kine-Lam said: “the outgoing Coordinators are not our enemies, let’s work hand in hand with them, they have experience, and they can help so seek expertise to collectively build Ghana.”

This is teamwork, let’s be free and work with them as brothers and sisters and produce pictorial and video evidence of your activities, she added.

“Tree-planting is one of the mitigating measures to prevent disaster, therefore venture into tree planting in places like schools to save and prevent wind and rainstorms related disasters”, the Bono Regional operations Officer, Nana Yeboah stated.
