TWEDA intensifies fight against plastic pollution in Sunyani Municipality

The Tano Women Empowerment and Development Association (TWEDA) has intensified its campaign against plastic pollution in the Sunyani Municipality by organizing a clean-up exercise and leading public awareness activities aimed at promoting proper waste management and environmental sustainability.

The clean-up exercise, which coincided with the National Clean-Up Exercise, was held on Sunday, July 12, 2026, following a series of community engagements and a radio discussion hosted on Radio B.A.R, the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation’s regional FM radio station in Sunyani, to commemorate this year’s World Environment Day.

Participants, including staff and volunteers of TWEDA, collected discarded plastic waste and polythene bags along a two-kilometre stretch from the Sunyani Teaching Hospital premises to the Penkwase Traffic Light. The waste was subsequently transported to an approved dumping site for disposal.

The activities form part of TWEDA’s project, “Reduce Plastic Pollution and Improve Waste Management in Sunyani Municipality,” which is being implemented with financial support from the Global Greengrants Fund (GGF).

The Executive Director of Livelihood and Environment Ghana (LEG), Mr. Richard Adjei-Poku, joined the clean-up exercise, lending his support to the initiative and emphasizing the importance of collective action in addressing the growing challenge of plastic pollution.

Beyond the clean-up exercise and radio programme, TWEDA has embarked on a series of advocacy and public sensitization campaigns targeting key stakeholders, including elected Assembly Members, traditional authorities, and community leaders.

The engagements are intended to encourage responsible waste management practices, strengthen environmental governance, and inspire community participation in protecting the environment.

Speaking on the organization’s commitment, Lucy Annor, the Coordinator of TWEDA, reiterated that tackling plastic pollution requires sustained public education, stronger partnerships, and active community involvement.

According to her, TWEDA believes that reducing plastic waste will not only improve sanitation but also safeguard public health and preserve the environment for future generations.
