To further remain competitive and provide holistic and industry-driven education in building design, development and management, the Sunyani Technical University (STU) has outdoored a new department

The Department of Architecture and Real Estate (DARE), the newest department on the STU campus, was carved out of the Building Department of the Faculty of Built Environment Applied Arts (FBEAA).

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) approved the creation of DARE on April 1, 2025.

With a student population of one hundred, DARE currently runs a Bachelor of Technology (B-Tech) degree in Interior Design, B-Tech degree in Facilities Management and Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Real Estate as well as a diploma in Real Estate.

A new undergraduate program, BSc in Architectural Technology will soon start running.

As a fully-fledged department, DARE hopes to be the center of excellence for the training of human resources to become transformative professionals in building design, development and management for sustainable built environments.

The Vice-Chancellor of STU, Ing. Prof. Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah said it was the first time a new department was being officially inaugurated in STU, describing the occasion as a “great milestone in the history of the University.”

He paid glowing tribute to the Dean of FBEAA, Professor Evans Zoya Kpamma, the Head of the Building Technology Department, Rev. Dr. Edward Nana Addy, the Foundation Head of the Department for DARE, Stephen Ameyaw and Architect Dr. Justice Offei-Nketia as well as all those who have played various roles towards the creation of the new department.

The Vice Chancellor encouraged collaboration and teamwork among the staff and students to foster a sense of shared ownership and responsibility for the success of the Department.

He further said: “Given the professional nature of your programs, academic-industry collaboration is also encouraged to offer industry-oriented research and training for your students, as enshrined in the mission statement.”

The Dean of FBEAA, Professor Evans Zoya Kpamma, noted that the new department provides a lot of prospects for students and entreated them to be disciplined and apply themselves to their studies.

He pledged the unwavering support and commitment of staff of the faculty to ensure the success of the department.

The Foundation Head of the Department for DARE, Stephen Ameyaw, appealed for additional teaching staff for the department to meet the growing number of programs and students.

There was an exhibition of some notable works by students of the department on display on the sidelines of the event.

The STU Chapter of the International Facilities Management Association (IFMA) Ghana was officially inaugurated as part of the ceremony.

The President of IFMA Ghana, Architect Sampson Opare Agyemang inaugurated the STU Chapter of the Association.
