The Sunyani Traditional Council has firmly rejected attempts by the Queenmother of Sunyani to reinstate the area’s suspended Krontihene, insisting that only the Council holds the legal authority to make such a decision.
In a statement, the Council emphasized that the power to lift the indefinite suspension of the Krontihene, Oboaman Bofotia Boa-Amposem II, rests solely with the Council, which imposed the sanction in 2024. The leadership, under Omanhene Odeefour Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II, has therefore urged the public to disregard any contrary claims.
Queenmother’s communication
The Queenmother, Nana Akosua Duaa Asor Brayie II, had earlier issued a letter dated April 13, 2026, arguing that the suspension – initially imposed to restore order within the Council – had achieved its purpose. She maintained that normalcy had returned and stressed the importance of the Krontihene role in the functioning of the Traditional Council.
She called on the Council to support the immediate lifting of the suspension. This was followed by a second letter dated April 20, 2026, addressed directly to the suspended chief, in which she announced the withdrawal of customary sanctions and indicated that he could resume his duties from April 27, 2026.
Traditional Council’s rebuttal
However, the Council swiftly pushed back. In a press release signed by Nana Kwaku Sarbeng Ababio II, Akwamuhene and Acting President of the Council, along with ten other chiefs, the Council clarified that the Queenmother is not a member of the Traditional Council and therefore lacks the authority to make or announce such decisions.
The statement revealed that the Queenmother had earlier sought the Council’s consent to revoke the suspension but was formally informed on April 17, 2026, that she had no capacity to do so. The Council described her subsequent public communication as “unacceptable” and “very strange,” given the sensitivity of the matter.
Reaffirming its position, the Council stated that the suspension of the Krontihene “still subsists” and remains in force until the Council decides otherwise. It added that the Queenmother’s purported revocation has “no effect” and should be treated as null and void.
The Council further noted that the Omanhene has been taking steps toward addressing the situation and remains committed to restoring order within the Krontire family and ensuring stability within the traditional leadership structure.
