Newmont partners government to construct Sunyani-Ntotroso-Acherensua road

The prolonged travel time on the main Sunyani-Ntotroso-Acherensua highway, which has been a nightmare to commuters owing to the deplorable state of the road, will soon be a thing of the past following an arrangement between Newmont Corporation, a mining company, and the government of Ghana to reconstruct the highway.

The 46-kilometer stretch, which was first constructed about 20 years ago is currently an eyesore as it is full of pot-holes and man-holes, bringing untold inconveniences to travelers on the road while compelling commercial drivers to be changing various parts of their vehicles every now and then.

But the story will soon change as Newmont is partnering the Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Roads and Highways, to reconstruct the 46km Sunyani-Ntotroso-Acherensua highway.

Earlier today Tuesday October 7, 2025 in Accra, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Newmont and the Ministry of Roads and Highways to that effect. The contractor has begun mobilization to commence work on the road as early as possible.

Newmont, in a statement issued by its Director of Communications โ€“ Africa, David Johnson, noted that the company has been particularly focused on infrastructure development over the years, in addition to its health, education, and other development-focused investments.

โ€œIn the Ahafo area, the company has funded and committed to the rehabilitation of major roads, including the Ntotroso-Kenyasi road, the Hwediem-Kenyasi road, and internal roads within the Ntotroso, Wamahinso, Gyedu, Kenyasi No.1 and Kenyasi No.2 communitiesโ€, the statement added.

It also said Newmont recognizes the important role that road infrastructure plays in facilitating the transportation of goods and services, as well as stimulating local economic growth, stressing that: โ€œIn supporting governmentโ€™s effort at improving infrastructure nation-wide, the company is living with its purpose of creating value and improving lives through sustainable and responsible mining.โ€

Residents of towns such as Antwikrom, Atronie, Kuffour Camp, Atuahenekrom, Wamahinso and Gyedu, which are all located along this route, could not hide their joy when they heard the news and commended Newmont for collaborating with the government to put the road back in shape.

In separate interviews, they emphasized the socio-economic benefits the country stands to gain when the road is reconstructed and called on the contractor to speed up construction works while ensuring the highest quality standards in the execution of the project.
