Tree planting is disaster prevention – NADMO

The Bono Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Mrs. Fati Kine-Lam, has called for collective efforts of individuals, households, groups and Institutions in planting, nurturing and growing trees for greening the environment and preventing disaster.

She emphasized that trees are silent protectors of humanity, because they do not only enhance the ecosystem, but also act as natural barriers against landslides, tsunami and flooding.

Speaking into the media in Sunyani, Mrs Kine-Lam explained that trees significantly contribute to preventing disaster through erosion reduction and mitigating impacts of extreme weather events.

She explained “trees protect and save our buildings from the effects of windstorms and other rainfall related disasters, as well as stabilized the soil and controls erosion during heavy rainfall and strong winds.

According to Mrs Kine-Lam the trees absorb and retain water to lower flood risk and act as windbreaks to reduce the force of strong wind. In areas prone to landslides, trees can help stabilize the slopes and prevent soil displacement.

The NADMO Director further explained broad-leave trees offer shades to cool urban areas and purify the air by filtering pollutants such as dust, smoke and others to improve air quality.

Environmental preservation

Mrs. Kine-Lam said because trees provide housing for millions of species and provide shelter for wildlife, humans are protected from many diseases. “Tree planting is therefore a reminder of our sacred responsibility in preserving our environment for our own good”, she said.

For his part, the Sunyani Forest District Manager, Mr. Kofi Adu Gyamfi, urged the public to actively participate in this year’s tree planting exercise.

He said the planting is throughout this June to September 2025, and the Sunyani Forest District is expected to plant 310,000 economic tree seedlings.

Mr. Gyamfi cautioned illegal loggers to stop, because the law would deal bitterly with any perpetrator.
