Sunyani Technical University (STU) will on Friday July 31, 2026 bid a formal farewell to its outgoing Registrar, Mr. Samuel Ankama Obour, as he retires from public service after nearly three decades of dedicated service to the institution.
The farewell ceremony, to be held at the University’s main auditorium, is expected to bring together teaching and non-teaching staff, students, alumni, family members, friends and other well-wishers to celebrate the remarkable career of one of the University’s longest-serving key officers.
Mr. Obour served the institution for 29 years, first as Polytechnic Secretary and later as Registrar following the conversion of Sunyani Polytechnic into Sunyani Technical University in 2016. Throughout his tenure, he earned a reputation for professionalism, discipline and an unwavering commitment to institutional excellence.
Widely respected for his diligence and high standards, Mr. Obour played a pivotal role in the University’s transformation through its various stages of development – from a technical institute to a polytechnic, and ultimately to a technical university. He was instrumental in strengthening administrative systems and ensuring that staff adapted effectively to the evolving demands of higher technical education.
He also championed staff development by facilitating numerous capacity-building programmes for both academic and non-academic staff, helping to enhance their professional competence and productivity. Many of the University’s current leaders and administrators count him among the mentors who shaped their careers.
Testimonies
Ahead of Friday’s ceremony, several senior members of the University have paid glowing tribute to the retiring Registrar, describing him as an exceptional leader, mentor and disciplinarian.
Mr. Francis K. Duah of the Registrar’s Secretariat described Mr. Obour as a compassionate leader who genuinely cared about the welfare and professional growth of his staff.
“His good heart was evident in the way he championed his team’s growth, always prioritising their well-being alongside the aspirations of the University. His relentless work ethic set a powerful example worthy of emulation,” he said.
The Secretary to the Vice-Chancellor, Mr. Ernest Kwame Owusu, described Mr. Obour as kind-hearted, generous, humble and disciplined, adding that he was always willing to mentor younger staff while fostering cordial working relationships across the University.
Mr. Desmond Oppong of the Directorate of Quality Assurance and Academic Planning (QAAP) said one of the greatest lessons he learned from the outgoing Registrar was the importance of punctuality.
“Having worked with him, I learned the value of punctuality. Whenever I have a meeting involving him, I make it a point to arrive early because I know he will already be there – often at least 30 minutes before the scheduled time,” Mr. Oppong recalled.
Several other staff members also praised Mr. Obour’s dedication, integrity and lasting contributions to the University’s growth.
Distinguished career
As the University prepares to celebrate his distinguished career, many believe Mr. Obour leaves behind a legacy of discipline, professionalism and selfless service that will continue to inspire generations of staff and students.
This Friday’s ceremony is expected to attract hundreds of guests, who will gather to honour a man whose contributions have left an enduring mark on the history and development of Sunyani Technical University.
