Wenchi MP donates bicycles to students in deprived communities

Alhaji Seidu Haruna, Member of Parliament for the Wenchi Constituency, has donated a hundred bicycles to basic school students from underserved communities within the Wenchi Municipality of Ghana’s Bono Region.

The initiative, dubbed “One Village, One JHS Student, One Bicycle”, is funded through the MP’s share of the District Assemblies’ Common Fund (DACF) and aims to ease the transportation challenges faced by schoolchildren in remote areas.

The project targets students, mostly girls aged eleven to 15, who walk long distances from farming communities such as Asuofiri, Bronoso, and Ahwene to attend school at Abotareye M/A Basic School. Other beneficiaries attend schools in Buoko, Pokukrom, Adiembra, Seikrom, and Mensakrom.

Speaking at a brief ceremony at Abotareye, where he presented 25 of the bicycles, Alhaji Haruna emphasized the importance of making education accessible to all children, regardless of location and stressed that distance should never be a barrier to education and expressed hope that the bicycles would help reduce lateness and absenteeism among students.

“Education is my top priority,” he stated, adding that he will continue to work with teachers, parents, and other stakeholders to ensure every school-age child in Wenchi has access to at least basic formal education.

He encouraged the beneficiaries to make good use of the bicycles by attending school regularly and studying hard to achieve their academic goals.

In addition to the bicycle project, Alhaji Haruna has also donated approximately 500 dual desks to various basic schools across the constituency. This effort supports the Wenchi Municipal Education Directorate’s work to address furniture shortages in schools.

The Headteacher of Abotareye M/A Basic School, Mr. Patrick Arhin, expressed gratitude for the MP’s support and appealed for assistance in solving the area’s long-standing water supply issues.
