A passionate English teacher based in Sunyani, Salomey Kwabea Agyei, is making waves in basic education with a bold mission to make reading fun, accessible, and foundational for every Ghanaian child.

Through her initiative, the ReadSpell Literacy Foundation, Miss Kwabea Agyei is helping pupils across the Bono Region improve their literacy skills through innovative, phonics-based learning.
With a clear focus on building a culture of reading, she has established reading clubs in both public and private schoolsโreaching over 100 schools so far.
Her impact spans 32 schools in Dormaa Central Municipality, 36 schools in Berekum East, and 44 schools in the Sunyani West Municipality. In the private school sector, Evanne Lighthouse Christian School at Drobo in the Jaman South Municipality and Crown Kids College in Sunyani are already active partners.

Beyond forming reading clubs, Miss Kwabea Agyei has introduced a variety of educational programmes designed to engage pupils and improve their reading and spelling abilities.
These include phonics-based learning sessions, book donations, spelling bee competitions, reading contests, talent shows, and teacher literacy workshops aimed at enhancing both student learning and teacher capacity.
Speaking in an interview, she reaffirmed her dedication to transforming literacy education through practical, engaging methods. โMy goal is to empower both teachers and pupils with the right tools and strategies to build a strong literacy foundation,โ she said.
Key resources used in her programme include the ReadSpell Teacherโs Guide and Workbook, ReadSpell storybooks, as well as fun spelling and phonics games, flashcards, and instructional YouTube videos.

These tools are not only making reading enjoyable for children but are also helping them develop confidence in their communication skills.
Despite the success and growing demand for her work, Miss Kwabea Agyei admits that sustaining the initiative has become challenging due to limited funding and lack of sponsorship.

โThe journey so far has been promising, but Iโm unable to scale up due to financial constraints. We urgently need support from individuals and organizations to provide more learning materials for the children in our ReadSpell Literacy Clubs,โ she appealed.
Miss Kwabea Agyei is a product of St. Ambrose College of Education, where she earned her Diploma in Basic Education. She holds a bachelorโs degree in English Language from the University of Cape Coast and is currently pursuing her masterโs degree in English Language at the University of Education, Winneba.
With her unwavering commitment and innovative approach, Miss Salomey Kwabea Agyei stands out as a beacon of hope for literacy education in the Bono Region. With the right support, she hopes to expand her programme across the region and eventually, nationwide.
