NADeF/Liebherr extend scholarship scheme to three students

Three university students from Kenyasi Number One and Ntotroso in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region have each been awarded Gh.c 10,000 as scholarship to support their studies in their respective universities.

The beneficiaries are Bezaleel Kwaku Mensah, who is pursuing Medicine and Surgery at the University of Health and Allied Sciences; Awuni Simon, a Pharmacy Technology student at the Sunyani Technical University (STU) and Joseph Amofa, who is studying Doctor of Pharmacy at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

Liebherr Ghana Limited, an on-site contractor of Newmont Ahafo Mine in partnership with Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation (NADeF), has in the past 13 years been providing scholarship support for highly driven and brilliant science and mathematics students within Newmont Ahafo Mineโ€™s catchment area.

Presenting the scholarships to the beneficiaries at a brief ceremony at the NADeF secretariat at Ntotroso, Prof. Yaw Ofosu-Kusi, the Chairman of the NADeF Board of Trustees, commended Liebherr for collaborating with the Foundation to develop the human resource base of the youth of the area.

He said this collaboration has, over the years, produced mining engineers, computer engineers, medical doctors, mathematicians, geological engineers, renewable energy engineers and laboratory scientists, among several other professionals who are serving in various public and private institutions in Ghana and abroad.

The Board Chair also said NADeF partners with organizations located and operating within Newmontโ€™s host communities in Ahafo to support deserving youth in their academics or apprenticeship.

โ€œThe Liebherr/NADeF Excellence Scholarship Awards is one of such partnerships between NADeF and Newmontโ€™s onsite contractor, Liebherr. The aim of the scholarship scheme is to support motivated, highly driven, and brilliant undergraduate science students to overcome the financial challenges associated with their studiesโ€, he explained.

Prof. Ofosu-Kusi advised the beneficiaries to ensure that they return to their communities to serve upon completion of their programmes as they have pledged.

According to him, human resource development, which is now synonymous with scholarships, in NADeFโ€™s beneficiary communities constitutes the largest support area as it takes up 28 percent of funds allocated to community development.

The Vendor Held Stock (VHS) Manager of Liebherr Ghana Limited, Mr. Samuel Allan Abban, congratulated the beneficiaries and added his voice to the call on them to redeem their pledge to return to their communities to serve upon completion.

He emphasized Liebherrโ€™s unwavering pledge to its corporate social responsibility commitments to Newmontโ€™s host communities in Ahafo.
