Asutifi North Assembly Members to Picket Newmont Over Road Works

Assembly members of the Asutifi North District, together with other stakeholders, will stage a protest on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, in Kenyasi and Ntotroso over what they describe as substandard road construction by Newmont Ghana Gold Limited.

The protesters are demanding asphalt roads instead of the current double-sealed (“sapetee”) roads being built under Newmont’s corporate social responsibility projects. They argue that asphalt roads are more durable and safer for the communities.

In a notice to the police, the assembly members accused Newmont of ignoring their repeated appeals and proceeding to engage a contractor to construct double-sealed roads without stakeholder consent, describing the action as a breach of trust.

They cited the rapid deterioration of similar roads in Ntotroso, Gyedu, and Wamahinso as evidence that double-sealed roads are unsuitable. They also expressed frustration that several meetings with Newmont representatives over the years have produced no meaningful results.

The group has called for an immediate suspension of the ongoing road construction work until their concerns are addressed.

The march will begin at 6:00 a.m. from the forecourt of the Church of Pentecost, Kenyasi Number Two, proceed along the Kenyasi–Ntotroso road, and end at the Newmont Plant Site.
